Electric bikes vary a lot under the surface, and the two specs that matter most before you buy are the motor and the battery. Getting familiar with the basics makes it much easier to compare models honestly instead of going on marketing copy alone.
Motor placement: hub vs. mid-drive
Hub motors sit in the front or rear wheel and push or pull the bike along. They tend to be simpler and less expensive, and they work well for flatter commuting routes. Mid-drive motors sit at the crank, work through the bike's existing gears, and generally handle hills and technical terrain better because they keep the bike's weight centered and low. If most of your riding is on varied terrain or steep climbs, a mid-drive setup is usually worth the extra cost.
Battery capacity and real-world range
Battery capacity is measured in watt-hours (Wh), and manufacturer range estimates are almost always best-case numbers. Rider weight, terrain, tire pressure, temperature, and how much you lean on the motor's higher assist levels can easily cut real-world range by a third or more. When comparing bikes, it helps to ask what range looks like on the assist level you'd actually use day to day, not just the lowest setting.
Class and local regulations
E-bikes are generally grouped into Class 1 (pedal-assist only, no throttle), Class 2 (throttle-assisted), and Class 3 (pedal-assist with a higher top speed). Local and state rules on where each class can be ridden — bike paths, greenways, trails — vary, so it's worth checking your area's regulations before you commit to a class.
